In April 1873, the Brighton Southern Cross newspaper reported that just past the Retreat Hotel (which later became the Hampton Hotel) ‘picnic parties were as thick as possible’.
From the 1870s, Sandringham, Hampton, Black Rock and Beaumaris were holiday destinations for people from Inner Melbourne and country Victoria.
Grand establishments like the Beaumaris (formerly the Great Southern) Hotel in Beach Road to modest beachside shacks, catered for visitors, especially over the summer months; many people had holiday homes in places like Black Rock; beaches along the Bay filled with holiday makers; trams and trains carried day trippers to the beaches.; early tea houses and confectionary shops catered for visitors.
Join us for a journey through some early photographs and discussion about a growing seaside area followed by a Christmas-themed afternoon tea.
