Post Offi ces were places of great importance prior to the advent of emails, and so the Commonwealth government designed them to be impressive architectural beacons of essential community facilities in every town.
The Federation Arts and Crafts style was considered appropriate for a domestic scale public building in a suburban village. Over time, the original red brick design suff ered a ‘modernisation’ of parts, thus reducing its architectural integrity. This is particularly noticeable with the removal of the arched entry to the portico, fl anked by banded piers.
The Post Offi ce was demolished 90 years after it was constructed, but the Old Post Offi ce Lane is still there.
