Villeroy

Villeroy

Following the end of the First World War, the Australian government built thousands of new homes for returning soldiers and their families. In Hampton, 67 acres of farmland was carved off the Castlefield Estate to create a neighbourhood of close to 300 Californian Bungalow houses – one of the largest war service home developments in Victoria.

In streets named after battlefields on the Eastern and Western Fronts, veterans and war widows set down new roots, raised families and helped to build our Hampton community.

Villeroy Street: After the Armistice of 11 November 1918, Australian soldiers faced a long and impatient wait for transport home. With many billeted in war-ravaged French villages like Villeroy, with no distractions and plentiful alcohol, the risk of misbehaviour and rioting was real.

Led by Sir John Monash, the Army swiftly established programmes of education, entertainment and sports to keep the men occupied and morale up. In the Villeroy region, troops could take part in concerts, football competitions and arts and crafts exhibitions.
