Name/TitleGrenville Street railway crossing, Hampton
About this objectIn April 2019, an 83-year-old Hampton grandmother lost her life when she was hit by a train at the Grenville Street railway crossing. The crossing did not have bells or gates. A community campaign involving Bayside Council and local Members of Parliament sought to improve safety at the crossing. Community meetings took place and an online petition was set up.
Late in 2019, the State Government closed the crossing completely pending upgrade works. The crossing was used regularly by locals and was one of the main routes connecting Hampton Street and the foreshore. Ultimately works to upgrade the crossing by installing gates and warning bells were completed in February 2021.
The photograph shows the Mayor of Bayside, Cr Laurence Evans, officially reopening the crossing, joined by local residents. It was taken from the Orlando Street end of the crossing, looking towards Grenville Street.
