Name/TitleEmpty shoppers car park, Hampton, during the pandemic
About this objectDuring the COVID-19 pandemic, regulations were in place to limit community mobility in order to reduce transmission of the virus. The photo shows a virtually empty shoppers car park in Willis Street, Hampton. It was taken mid-morning on a weekday, a week after stage 4 restrictions had started during Melbourne’s second lockdown.
At the time, there were only four reasons for leaving home: food and supplies, medical care, exercise, and work/education. Travel was restricted to 5 km from home, only one person per household could shop once each day, and outdoor exercise was limited to an hour per day. Melburnians had to work from home unless they were a permitted worker holding a permit.
Many shops had to close, and cafés and restaurants could only serve takeaways. The overall result was a steep decline in people moving around the community, with most aspects of life being impacted. Many car parks in shopping areas were hardly utilised at times.
