About this objectDuring the COVID-19 pandemic, community murals were an artistic expression of thanks and brought joy to local communities.
In June 2020, Daiana Ingleton completed a 4m high x 10m long mural at 78 Station Street, Sandringham. Shown in the photo, it was based on children’s drawings of rainbows during COVID-19. A worldwide movement, the motivation behind rainbows was to reassure children that the pandemic would not last for ever and to cheer people up.
Daiana was quoted as saying: ‘Not only are there incredible health care workers and essential workers helping to resolve the COVID-19 pandemic, there are people at home whose positivity and strength is needed in order to make it through these tough COVID times. I took the rainbow windows as inspiration. The many windows outnumber the virus, which visually combats the sometimes overwhelming and stressful feelings of not having control over our lot. Every rainbow is different and mimics the cheer and colour within children’s drawings’.
