Name/TitleBay views free from pollution during the pandemic
About this objectDuring the June quarter of 2020, Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions fell to their lowest level for 22 years.* This was due largely to steep reductions in petrol consumption and, in particular, aviation fuel. Australia’s international borders were closed and interstate travel was heavily restricted. There was a dramatic reduction in both vehicular travel and flights.
As a consequence, it was noticeable how clear the views across the Bay were; the haze that often surrounded the city seemed to disappear. The photo was taken from Green Point, Brighton, looking across to the city. At the time, Melbourne’s stage four restrictions had been in place for a week during the second lockdown. All other Australian jurisdictions had closed their borders to Victoria, and Melbourne was not accepting international flights for Australians returning home.
