About this objectIn line with directions to work from home, Bayside Council customer service counter first closed during the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020. The photo is of the sign at the Council’s Corporate Centre, advising of the closure and giving website and telephone contact options.
Council provided support including emergency food relief, delivered meals, referral to specialist agencies, a social connections program, and help with shopping and in home care. Residents could contact Council for assistance through a community support line.
Council’s hardship policy applied to any residents who were having difficulty paying rates as a result of the pandemic. Fee relief was also available for impacted community groups and sports clubs. Council provided assistance packages for local businesses, including fee waivers for food, health and street trading permits, and rent deferrals of Council owned buildings.
During lockdowns, Council and committee meetings went ahead online and were livestreamed via Council’s website. Public questions were read out at the meetings. The Major also conducted citizenship ceremonies online, with a series of ceremonies at 15 minute intervals.
