Name/TitleNotice of lockdown closure, Handworks
About this objectThe retail sector was adversely impacted right from the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Non-essential retail outlets started to close from late March. Essential retail remained open for necessary goods and services: these included supermarkets, pharmacies, butchers, green grocers, bottle shops, petrol stations, post offices, banks, food stores, newsagents, liquor stores, and pet stores. Other retail shops were only available for delivery or contactless click and collect. This was the pattern in all of Melbourne’s lockdowns.
The photo shows a notice erected by Handworks, Church Street, Brighton during Melbourne’s sixth lockdown. Retailers had faced many challenges during the lockdowns, reflected by the wording on the notice, ‘Here we go again Lockdown 6.0’.
The sixth lockdown started on 5 August 2021. Non-essential retail was only able to reopen on 22 October 2021 and then, for the first week, they could only trade outdoors.
