Name/TitleQR code checking-in requirements, Glasshouse, Hampton
About this objectFrom mid-May 2020, coinciding with the end of Melbourne’s first COVID-19 lockdown, recordkeeping requirements were introduced to support contact tracing. Health officials attempted to trace close contacts of anyone infected, assisted by the records kept at venues. They then advised those contacts of the need to test and isolate.
Venues such as cafés, libraries, places of worship and hairdressers had to record the first name and phone number of anyone attending for more than 15 minutes. They could use paper-based systems or keep electronic records.
After Melbourne’s second lockdown ended in October 2020, businesses were strongly encouraged to use QR codes or other electronic records. Various QR code applications were available for use. The photo shows the QR code system used by the café Glasshouse, Hampton. The details customers recorded included the table reference; QR codes were fixed to each table.
In 2021, the government mandated the use of QR codes to check-in at venues.
