Name/TitleGuy Boyd’s sculpture of The Swimmer wearing a face mask
About this objectIn late July 2020, during Melbourne’s second COVID-19 lockdown, face coverings were mandated for the first time. They had to be worn whenever leaving home, subject to some exemptions. The requirement to wear masks varied during the rest of the pandemic, according to whether Melbourne was in lockdown and the level of transmission risk in the community.
The photo was taken during Melbourne’s fifth lockdown, at a time when masks were mandatory. Someone had placed a mask on Guy Boyd’s statue, on the corner of Royal Avenue and Bluff Road, Sandringham.
