Name/TitleFace masks mandatory sign, Metro Trains
About this objectIn late July 2020, during Melbourne’s second COVID-19 lockdown, face coverings were mandated. They had to be worn whenever leaving home, subject to some exemptions. Most people wore face masks, but face shields and coverings, such as scarves, were initially also permitted. Masks did not have to be medical grade and could either be disposable or reusable cloth masks.
The photo shows the sign displayed at Hampton Railway Station, reminding patrons of the need to comply with the mandate. Trains ran to a normal timetable during the pandemic but many Melburnians worked from home and commuter numbers reduced considerably.
Those who did use trains were told to stand on escalators with four steps between them and other passengers; keep their distance from others who were waiting; take an umbrella to avoid gathering under shelters; wait for passengers to get off before boarding; keep doorways clear so people could get on and off safely; and, if a carriage was busy, to try a different door or wait for the next service.
