Name/TitleSign, masks not to be removed to consume alcohol
About this objectIn late July 2020, during Melbourne’s second COVID-19 lockdown, face coverings were mandated for the first time. They had to be worn whenever leaving home, subject to some exemptions. They could be removed for eating and drinking.
The requirement to wear masks varied during 2021 and 2022. Sometimes they were only required indoors (other than at home); on other occasions they were restricted to public transport, airports, and sensitive settings such as aged care.
In August 2021 after an organised takeaway-drink pub crawl took place in Richmond, the rule was tightened. Masks could then only be removed for non-alcoholic beverages. As a result, the Brown Cow, café in Hampton, displayed the notice shown in the photo, reminding patrons that they could not remove their masks to consume alcohol. At the time, hospitality venues were closed except for takeaway and delivery.
In early October 2021, the restriction on removing masks to consume alcohol outside was removed.
