Name/TitlePharmacy notice, Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs) out of stock
About this objectUntil January 2022, PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests were the only option for verifying a COVID-19 infection. Sites were set up at many locations for members of the public to attend to give samples. The test took around a minute and involved taking a sample swab from the back of the throat and nose. Samples were then forwarded to a laboratory for testing. Results were sent by text; other than at peak times these were usually available within 24 hours.
In November 2021, the federal government authorised the use at home of rapid antigen tests (RATs). The tests were sold in retailers such as pharmacies and supermarkets. They were quick, giving results usually within 10 to 20 minutes, and could be self-administered at home.
In January 2022, when the PCR testing system became overwhelmed, the government changed the rules to enable positive RAT results to be regarded as probable positive cases. However, RAT kits were in very short supply initially and many retailers did not have any stock. The notices in the photo displayed by Hampton Discount Pharmacy advise of unavailability and the next anticipated delivery day.
