Name/TitlePoster encouraging social distancing
About this objectDuring the COVID-19 pandemic everyone, even when well, was called on to help slow the spread of the virus. Social distancing was one of the key actions everyone was asked to follow. Australians were told to keep their distance, staying at least 1.5 metres away from others where possible. The aim was to slow transmission of the virus and reduce demands on the health system.
People stopped hugging, greeting others with a kiss, giving high fives or shaking hands. Some adopted the practice of touching elbows as an alternative greeting. On paths and pavements, walkers would move to one side, or out onto the road, in order to keep the required social distance.
The photo shows a poster issued by the Australian Government, encouraging everyone to keep their distance. The poster was widely displayed in Bayside during the pandemic.
