Name/TitlePolice checkpoint during the pandemic, Beach Road
About this objectDuring the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns, there were limitations on when people could leave home. In addition, at times Melbournians were prevented from travelling beyond a certain distance from home and, for two periods, curfews were in place.
To enforce the restrictions, police set up checkpoints across Victoria. Locally in Bayside, a regular checkpoint was set up in July 2020 at Brighton Beach, with police using the car park near the Beach–South Roads intersection. Police checked that drivers and passengers had an acceptable reason for leaving home. The photos show cars pulled over at the checkpoint.
At the time, there were no restrictions on the distance Melburnians could travel from home, but they were not allowed to travel into regional Victoria. However, there were only four reasons for leaving home: food and supplies, medical care, exercise/recreation, and work/education.
