Name/TitlePoppies from the 5000 Poppies collection during lockdown, Sandringham
About this objectAll dawn services, marches and ANZAC Day events were cancelled during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. People were encouraged by the RSL to pay respect from home by standing outside to observe a minute’s silence at dawn, holding a torch or candle. Some made poppies to display in their windows or outside their homes. Other families created their own ceremonies outside.
The 5000 Poppies project started when two Melbourne women made 120 poppies to “plant” at the Shrine of Remembrance in 2013 in honour of their fathers and their war service. Locally, the plan in 2020 was to create a big display of poppies in Sandringham but the pandemic prevented this from occurring. Instead poppies sprung up around Sandringham, including in Codrington Street.
