Name/TitleFamily bike ride during COVID-19 pandemic, Sandringham
About this objectDuring the COVID-19 pandemic, cycling became an increasingly popular form of exercise. Bike sales rose initially in April 2020 during Melbourne’s first lockdown. At that time gyms closed and community sports stopped. Particularly at weekends, it became a common sight in Bayside for parents to be out cycling with their children. This photo shows a family riding together in Abbott Street, Sandringham, on ANZAC Day 2020.
Retailers reported that demand was especially high for children’s bikes and those for general use by parents. By July 2020 most wholesalers had sold out of stock, and retailers were selling bikes before they arrived in stores. Supply chains were also adversely impacted by a pause in development in Europe and the slowing of production in Asia, disrupting deliveries to Australia. There was even a shortage of shipping containers, delaying potential shipments. Retailers reported even selling out of bikes that had been one or two seasons old because people were ‘so desperate’. Buyers also reported the second hand market being very low on stock.
