BAND ROTUNDA 1926

BAND ROTUNDA 1926

LOCATED IN THE SANDRINGHAM BEACH PARK

The Sandringham Band Rotunda, on the foreshore at the end
of Melrose Street, was erected in 1926 to replace the original
Rotunda on the same site, built in 1908. The present Rotunda
contains a drinking fountain that was a gift to the people of
Sandringham from Dr Thomas Garnet Leary, a well known local
medical doctor who was very active in the community.

The Rotunda was designed by Sandringham’s fi rst City Engineer,
William Sunderland, who pioneered the use of reinforced
concrete for all types of construction. It was a big project in 1926
and, when completed, band recitals became a popular feature
on Sunday afternoons during the summer months. The 46th
Battalion Brass Band and the Sandringham Boys’ Band were
regular performers.

In December 1994, four fl oodlights were installed on each
corner of the Rotunda’s canopy, along with other improvements.
It could then be seen by boats out on the Bay at night. Local
businesses supported Rotary in raising the $15,000 for the
project. It was a Christmas gift to the people of Sandringham
from local business people.
