ROBERT LAW bio
Robert Law (1870 – 1930) was Chief Chemist, Assayer and Refiner at the Royal Mint, Melbourne. He was born in Scotland (20 April 1870 at Fruchie, Fife near Falkland).
Associated with the (Victorian) Volunteer Defence Forces for over twenty years he enlisted for the AIF in 1916 and served in France where he commanded the Third Pioneer Battalion, A.I.F., with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel., being mentioned in despatches. He travelled widely before and after the war. Besides being a keen photographer (some 1100 of his lantern slides were bequeathed to the Royal Historical Society Victoria), he was interested in yachting, athletics, swimming and chemical research. He was Treasurer of the Brighton Yacht Club and served as President of the Society of Chemical Industry of Victoria. He was President of the Brighton Soldiers Memorial Committee. Robert arrived in Melbourne on 22nd November 1890 on the Oceana. He lived in Brighton from 1898 until his death in 1930. Firstly in Cochrane Street until 1902, ‘Claverton’ in Windermere Road until 1907 and lastly at ‘Birralee’ – 27 Sussex Street.
